CSA Propylaea Project Page: Survey Notebooks

As the survey team worked on the NW wing of the Propylaea, the archaeologists (Mr. Kanellopoulos, Mr. Eiteljorg, and Mr. Scahill) took notes to specify the points surveyed, linking the surveyors' data points to the notebook data. Not only were there notes, but Mr. Kanellopoulos made many small drawings on the notebook pages to provide guidance. As noted elsewhere, the information from the notebook pages was ultimately put into the database concerning the NW wing. (See the page about survey methods.)

The notebook pages were photocopied in Athens and sent to the CSA offices by Mr. Kanellopoulos to avoid any chance of losing the originals in transit, and the photocopies were found to be more than adequate for understanding the survey information. Occasional notes were placed on those pages during the process of putting the information into the database.

All the pages at the CSA offices, complete with any added notes, have been scanned - in color at 300 d.p.i. - and incorporated into four PDF files, each of which is quite large. The last two pages of the final PDF file are scans of the drawings used in the field to guide the note-taking. (Block/surface numbers are noted there; they correspond with the numbers in the CAD model; see the CAD Models page and information there about the model of the NW wing.)

Since the survey work was broken by a bank holiday, the copies were sent in two groups: 1) copies of all the pages from the work completed by the time of the bank holiday, and 2) copies of all the pages from the work completed after the holiday. Notes concerning the second work session began on the partially-used last page of the notes from the first session; so that page has been scanned twice, once in its partially-complete state as the last page of the first work session and once in its final state as the first page of the second work session.

The scanning and PDF-generation process permits some numbering options for the pages in the PDF files. Therefore, to the extent possible, the PDF page numbers correspond to the notebook page numbers. When the notebook page numbering was confused, resulting in pages such as 43A, the PDF page numbers cannot correspond.

	Note the color differences between the top photo and the lower one. This reflects the color of the sunlight at the west end of the Acropolis, with the morning light being cool and the afternoon light warm, growing steadily warmer toward sunset.
